Overview:
The primary content for the course pertains to the principles, functions and organization of government; the origins of the American political system; the roles, rights, responsibilities of United States citizens; and methods of active participation in our political system. The course is also embedded with strong geographic and economic components to support civic education instruction.

Grading will be done on a four point scale.
4 = (A) - 3.45 - 4.0
3 = (B) - 2.45 - 3.44
2 = (C) - 1.45 - 2.44
1 = (D) - .45 - 1.44
0 = (F) - .44 - 0.00
0 = (F) - NTI - Not Turned In

What Mr. Rappaport expects from his students:
- Be prepared and ready to work.
- Try not to miss class, especially on test review days (no test review makeups will be given).
- Work to your full potential.
- Use social skills.
- Take pride in your work.
- Follow all rules and procedures.
Homework
- All homework is due on the day of the test. New work will be given on test day for the next chapter.
- Workbooks will remain in the class. We will remove pages for homework when needed.
- If completed before due date- write your name on the 1st page and place it in your period’s tray in the homework cubby. No name work will not be graded.
- Late homework will only be worth a 2 (C) of the possible grade if done correctly. Work not turned in will result in a zero. Late work cannot be turned in after a quarter is over.
- You will need to log onto my website www.greenwoodlakessocialstudies.weebly.com to print out homework.
- You can also find my website by going to the Greenwood Lakes Middle School main site, http://www.greenwoodlakes.scps.k12.fl.us/ ,then click on student, then click on GLMS History.
Online Book
No Internet Access
- You are required to have online Internet access for this course to view the textbook online for homework assignments.
- The web address is http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/connected/login.do
- Your log-on for the online book will be your student number followed by the letter s
- Your password will be your year of birth, month, and then day followed by the letter s. YYYYMMDD s (no spaces).
- If there is an online video or homework assigned, it is up to you to log-in, before the due date, and complete the activity.
- The website sends me a report letting me know which students participated and which did not.
No Internet Access
- If you do not have Internet access, you will need to order a book to use at home through the SCPS website.
- This is the link for the SCPS form that you will need to fill out electronically.
- It will be scanned out to your child like a library book and you will be responsible for its well-being over the course of the year. Damaged or lost books are your responsibility and can cost approximately $60 and up to replace.
- Books can take upwards of 2 weeks or more to arrive at the school so please order quickly if needed.
Cooperative Learning Groups
- You will be in groups almost every day so you will need to stay on task. Your group depends on you.
- You will be required to get up and move around during certain activities.
- Everybody WILL participate.
- Discussions and/or group talking is only permitted during appropriate points during the class.
- When in discussion situations, you are expected to keep discussions centered on task at hand (No off-topic discussions).
- At certain times in an activity you may be required to write, speak or present your group’s material to the class.
- Anyone not on task (after warning) will be removed from the group & will be responsible for ALL the work on their own.
Extra Help:
I truly want you to have a successful year, but you have to be responsible for letting me know when you need help or there is something you don’t understand. I am available immediately after class for quick questions, or you can come and see me before school.
Once you and your parents have read these procedures, please sign below in ink and return the entire form by Friday, August 22nd for a participation grade of a 4 - A. Forms not returned will result in a participation grade of a zero - F. This form will be placed in your child’s folder so that they can reference it as needed. Parents are encouraged to print a copy or make a copy for themselves.
