Ch. 3: Americans, Citizenship, and Government
"Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have." - Winston Churchill
The Story Matters:
American citizens are a diverse group of people. On a stroll through New York City, for example, you might see a woman in traditional Indian clothing or a man wearing a kippah, or Jewish skullcap. You ight hear people speaking Chinese or Greek. You might taste a Syrian falafel or a Mexican tortilla.
The 2010 U.S. Census says 12 percent of Americans are immigrants and 11 percent have at least one immigrant parent. About 98 percent of us have a foreign-born ancestor. Many of them entered the United States through Ellis Island in New York City. This immigration station processed some 12 million immigrants into the nation. Most became U.S. citizens.

An Increasingly Diverse Nation: Let's take a quick look at the map and chart below. Between 1830 and 1930, the nation's population grew from about 12 million people to nearly 120 million, and about 40 million of those people were immigrants. These people brought many different ways of life to their new home, and helped make the U.S. a diverse country. Today, that diversity continues to grow, as the U.S. population steadily moves toward 315 million people.
