Skyward Letter:
Dear Parents,
The Civics End of Course Exam is right around the corner. 24 school days to be exact (Monday - Friday). I am attaching 3 things to this email: A PowerPoint with 55 practice questions (with answers), a summary that is aligned with the PowerPoint explaining the answers in case students do not remember the information, and a study guide.
Civics teachers know what Florida benchmarks are on the test, but not the questions themselves. Everything I am sending is aligned to those benchmarks. I have also posted them on my website under the EOC tab, under Skyward material. If your child looks at that tab however, there is so much more that they can use to study and be prepared for this test. Please know, if you already don't, that this test is 30% of their entire grade for the year. My class is only 70% of their grade for the year.
I keep telling the students that you can under prepare for a test, but not over prepare. I am not saying that they should stress out and think they cannot do this. If you and I were not here helping them, I would understand. But we are working together to help your child achieve success. If your child takes fifteen minutes a night to read over the material, including what is on my site under the EOC tab, they will be more confident when they take the on May 7th and 8th. While I am doing practice questions every day with them, we still have chapter 25 to go so we won't be doing a full blown review for another 10 days or so. It is imperative that students, on their own at home, start reading and studying. The EOC tab on my site has chapter summaries for all 15 chapters, test taking tips, benchmark clarifications, vocabulary, practice tests, and so much more. I have even included a link to the Escambia County website which has even more information.
I am not a fan of high-stakes testing by any means. However, I am a fan of students studying, learning, and doing their best. I believe that your child is smarter now then when they came into my classroom last August. I believe that they are amazing kids with a lot of potential. I would also like to let you know that my amazing students helped to contribute $296 and change to the pasta for pennies that went to help children with cancer. It was only supposed to be students from my 4th period contributing, but all of my class periods went above and beyond. Even those that couldn't donate money still felt the pull of helping, which was amazing.
I know that I am hard on the students in regards to accountability, but I am the same with my own kids at home. While I do not coddle them, I do give them numerous chances and I truly enjoy being around them. We have fun.
Thank you for the opportunity this year to teach your child. Many of you have sent me amazing comments throughout the year and I wanted to let you know I appreciate it. I work during the week, at night, and on the weekends to make sure your child learns something when they walk through my door.
The kids got their D.C. packets yesterday. The meeting is on April 14th, 5:30pm, in the Media Center. I hope to see you then.
