Ch. 14: Local Government
"Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future." - John F. Kennedy
The Story Matters: Local Government
Many towns across the United States have town hall buildings like this one in Chesapeake City, Maryland. Local people and visitors are welcome to come to the town government offices located here. Residents may also gather here to attend town meetings where they will discuss and vote on a variety of important issues.
The practice of holding town meetings to discuss local issues goes back to the American colonies. American colonists in the 1700's often met in local inns or taverns to discuss political matters. In some New England towns, people gathered in a central pasture or a commons in the town center. The tradition of governing through town meetings continues in many small American communities today.

It Matters Because:
Lesson 1: City Governments - Most Americans live in cities and towns. Their local government has a direct influence on their daily lives.
Lesson 2: County Governments - Like city governments, county governments affect people's everyday lives. However, county governments provide different services and meet different needs.
Lesson 3: Towns, Townships, and Villages - American democracy began in towns. The town meetings held in the New England colonies allowed community members to take part in their government. Town meetings are still held today.
