Ch. 8: The President
“Mankind must put an end to war — or war will put an end to mankind. ” – John F. Kennedy
The Story Matters:
In 2008, Americans made history by electing Barack Obama as the 44th president and the first African-American to hold the office. Before becoming president, Obama served as an Illinois state senator and as a U.S. Senator from Illinois.
Obama's father was from Kenya and his mother was American. He grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia. After attending college in California and New York, he worked to improve life in poor Chicago communities. He later became a civil rights lawyer and a law professor before running for the Illinois Senate. When he became president, Obama brought a unique and varied set of skills and experiences to this difficult job.
