Ch. 11: Voting and Elections
"Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting." - Franklin D. Roosevelt
The Story Matters:
The right to vote is perhaps the most important privilege you will have as a citizen in a representative democracy. Elections give citizens the opportunity to choose their leaders, decide important issues, and shape their government.
Citizens can cast their ballots through the mail before Election Day. However, most people go to their local polling station at a school, a church, or even a neighbor's house.
Whether an election is held to choose a local mayor, a state governor, or the president of the United States, voting is a personal process that takes place in a small, private voting booth. The ballots are secret. Privacy and secrecy ensure that each voter can cast his or her ballot free from outside influences or pressure.
